Besides the 12 progenitors (which are group leaders)
we
have other 32 group leader shapes registered. Besides historical
reasons,
priority in registering or market presence, it is without question that
some of these have obtained their leadership because of "politics"
(either
because they were linked to someone influential or supported by a
renown
pipemaker), others deserved their original denomination because of
their
wide spread defusion among pipe smokers. The characteristics of the
head
group shapes end up being adopted, sometimes maintaining the same name,
by "variations" of other head group shapes. Either way, we enjoy
thinking
that all the head groups, no matter what, have established an excellent
"base" for the free hand evolution that - embraced by great craftsman -
have often surpassed, in style and enjoyment, the original shapes.
