N.B.: Per ogni tabacco assaggiato, riporto una breve introduzione da Synjeco e le mie note personali... ovviamente ognuno fuma ciò che più gli piace ed evita accuratamente di fumare ciò che non gli aggrada :-)

Name: St. Bruno  - Natural Virginia - Flake - Medium to full
AITS Index: "Blend of Virginia and other selected tobaccos. Slow burning and cool with a pleasant aroma."
Note: Aspettavo da tempo di assaggiare questo classico. Non è così forte come viene descritto, né a mio avviso del tutto naturale (profuma d?anice). Per me nell?Olimpo dei tabacchi con: Capstan, Three Nuns, Escudo e ? le English Mixtures!

Name: Samuel Gawith - Best Brown 6" - Natural Virginia - Flake - Mild to medium
Comment: This is Samuel Gawith's most popular tobacco in the UK, and it's highly appreciated by those who love 6" flakes in general. It's in a class of its own. The cut of the tobacco before pressing is fine, and the flakes are cut thin; so, it's very easy to rub out, pack and burn. It smokes very cool with no harshness whatsoever. The taste has some inexplicable sweetness and sourness to it. Most highly recommended.
Note: Di questo tipo di tabacchi conoscevo solo il Capstan, che a mio avviso è uno dei tabacchi migliori. Questo non è però peggiore e costa anche meno. Per me è un ottima scelta, anche se non condivido molto il fatto che sia facile da caricare e fumare. Anzi penso sia un tantino ostico in generale, ma se con un po? di pazienza ci si prende la mano è decisamente appagante.

Name: Samuel Gawith - Medium Virginia - Natural Virginia - Broken Flake - Mild
Comment: This is a gorgeous-looking tobacco! The wide and long flakes are broken only slightly. The taste and aroma are so natural and yet sweet. I believe it's a true example of how sweet natural Virginias can be. I find it to be extremely pleasant any time of the day. It also has a very pleasant room aroma.
Note: E? più bello da vedere che da fumare. Un po? inconsistente e privo di particolari note. Buonino, ma per me migliore utilizzato in miscela con altri tabacchi.

Name: Samuel Gawith - Full Virginia Flake - Natural Virginia - Thick Flakes - Full
Comment: First, by no means I can use the word "Full" to describe this tobacco. It's so smooth on palate, tongue, throat and stomach. The taste is simply fabulous. It's a tobacco I could smoke all the time for the rest of my life (and I'm a dedicated pressed Virginia guy!). I most highly recommend it to those of you who appreciate the wonders of natural pressed Virginias.
Note: Questo sarebbe un flake OTTIMO (appagante, pieno di intensità, retrogusto e quant?altro), ma purtoppo non prende il voto pieno perché è indubbiamente un po? forte e quindi non adatto a tutte le occasioni. Inoltre è veramente ?Hard to rub and pack? perché molto pressato. Però è una vera esperienza del gusto!

Name: Samuel Gawith - Kendal Plug - Natural Virginia - Plug - Mild
Comment: Who knows Samuel Gawith knows their famous Kendal Plug. The tobacco has a naturally sweet smell, and when burning, it produces a very pleasant room aroma. The taste tends to be sweetish, particularly at the beginning, and then slowly the sweetness gives some way to a whole range of taste variations, all very pleasant. It burns so slowly and evenly. I also find it to be a very satisfying smoke.
Note: Un buon tabacco davvero (non privo di profondità, ma anche di qualche asprezza), ma i plug in generale sono più uno sfizio per una volta che altro, perché sono veramente poco pratici. Io li ho provati soprattutto per divertimento.

Name: Samuel Gawith - Cannon Plug - Flavored Virginia - Plug - Medium
Comment: This is also declared 100% natural by Samuel Gawith, which is impossible! The smell, and later the taste and aroma, are all very intriguingly sweet and heavily flavored. It somehow smells of a mysterious combination of exotic spices! During the smoke, the taste changes from sweet, to bitter, to spicy, etc. The smell to non-smokers is very pleasant though could be overwhelming at first. This is definitely a tobacco that offers an unusual, and yet pleasant, smoking experience.
Note: Quando l?ho provato io non era ancora tra i ?flavored?!!! Ho avuto modo di dire a Tarek che è più una saponetta che un tabacco, ed era anche d?accordo con me! Peraltro, profumi a parte, è pure un ottimo tabacco, che ho finito per fumare mscelato con altri non ?odorosi?. Naturalmente valgono anche qui le considerazioni relative ai Plug in generale.

Name: Samuel Gawith - Black XX - Natural Virginia - Twist - Full
Comment: This is a truly delicious twist. It's jet-black and sinister-looking; however, it smokes so smoothly. When sliced thin, rubbed out well, and smoked in a small pipe, it smokes yet more evenly and its strength is less overwhelming. The taste is "oily", combined with a delicate touch of sweetness and spiciness; the aroma is natural and sweet, both smoked and unsmoked. It's a serious tobacco, especially suited for those who are used to full-bodied pressed Virginias. I recommend smoking it after a good meal, unless you know the limits (lack thereof) of your stomach (and also head!). The level of nicotine makes it a tobacco for the brave (though less than the level in the Brown Twist).
Note: Anche qui lo sfizio del formato ha vinto sul resto, ma nonostante la forza (anche se per me inferiore a quella dichiarata) l?ho trovato un tabacco ottimo, anche se devo dire che lo si può fumare solo dopo una lauta cena d?inverno Peraltro, io sono un amante dei tabacchi forti (sbriciolo toscani nella pipa a tutto andare). Da provare nella vita (in questa, per lo meno.)

Name: Samuel Gawith - Brown No. 4 - Natural Virginia - Twist - Extra Full
Comment: This is by far Samuel Gawith's strongest tobacco. I, therefore, do not recommend to the faint-hearted! The twist is not as compact as the "Black XX"; so, preparing it for maximum smoking pleasure might require a bit more work. I recommend cutting it as a fine as possible, and then smoking it slowly in a small to medium size bowl. If you find it to be a bit too strong, you might want to try adding it to another mixture. It could add a nice taste and full-bodiedness to a mild blend. If you're into really full-bodied tobaccos, you should give this one a try. You can always order one packet of 25g/1oz.
Note: Valgono le stesse considerazioni fatte per il Black XX. Qui il tabacco è più naturale e l?odore di ?toscano? (Kentuky fired) è più evidente. E? assolutamente favoloso (per chi riesce a fumarlo) e non prende il giudizio di ECCELLENTE (il miglior tabacco che abbia mai fumato) solo perché è troppo particolare e non adatto a tutte le occasioni.

Name: Schurch - Tarek Robusto - Classic English - Mixture - Medium tu full
Ingredients: Two Virginias, Latakia and a bit of Perique.
Comment: Yes, Hans made this mixture, with me in mind back in 1994; at that time, I smoked exclusively English with Latakia. Since then, the mixture has always been marketed with the name you see above. Now, the pouch aroma reveals the sweetness of the VAs, the smokiness of the Latakia, and the oiliness of the Orientals used. Upon lighting I find the tobacco to be very "creamy" and smooth on the palate and a bit spicy in the nose, without being harsh or aggressive; later a taste of "muddy" soil comes through and it is wonderfully complementary to the rest of the tastes present. Gradually you get to realize how complex this mixture is: There is a host of distinct tastes that are never in conflict with each other. This is a great instance of a mixture that allows you to enjoy its wholeness, without losing site of the taste and aroma of its individual ingredient tobaccos. At the end, a slight taste of "lime" develops, and it is a nice way to round off the myriad of tastes enjoyed in the course of the smoke. Combustion is very regular and slow. This is an ideal mixture for moments of relaxation and contemplation.
Note: Sulle English Mixture in genere c?è da dire poco (sono miscele abbastanza ben conosciute e apprezzate). Di questa posso solo dire che è buona, ma non la migliore del gruppo (ha qualche asprezza).

Name: Schurch - Mogano - Classic English - Mixture - Medium tu full
Ingredients: Several Virginias, including highest quality Havana Leaf, Latakia, and Orientals.
Comment: Here's a very special Mixture in all its aspects. The uniqueness comes from the Havana tobaccos used. If a tobacco could be descibed as "creamy" in taste, this is definitely the one. A great pleasure when smoked after dinner. If you occasionally (or often) enjoy a quality cigar, you should try this mixture.
Note: Questa l?ho scelta per la presenza di Havana e ? ho fatto bene: potrei anche non fumare altro per il resto della vita (per dirla alla Tarek), faccio fatica a trovargli un difetto, altro che ?after dinner?!.

Name: Schurch - Don Carlos - Classic English - Mixture - Mild to Medium
Ingredients: "Mainly" several Virginias, Kentucky, Orientals, Latakia, and a touch of Perique.
Comment: This is as complicated as a tobacco mixture can be. An all-day smoke with a rich taste and aroma. As you may know, this mixture was made to honor the high quality of the Don Carlos pipes, and hence the name. Yes, it does live up to the name!
Note: Ottima, ma un po? leggerina rispetto a ciò che mi aspetto da una EM (non amo troppo l?Early Mornig, per esempio, anche se lo fumo volentieri)

Name: Schurch - Torina - Classic English - Mixture - Mild to Medium
Ingredients: Several Virginias, Orientals, and Syrian Latakia.
Comment: Now, here's a revelation: No modern mixture comes closer to the old Balkan Sobranie Mixtures, precisely "759". Fans of the old Sobranie have been very happy to find such a perfect substitute. What more can be said! (Only the looks of the mixture are not those of Sobranie.)
Note: Non so che dire rispetto al BS 759 perché non l?ho mai provato. Conosco invece bene il BS busta bianca, che è uno dei miei preferiti. Ecco: questo non c?entra niente! Però è buonissimo (quasi quanto il Mogano).
Giudizio: OTTIMO (Uno dei migliori tabacchi che abbia mai fumato)

Name: Swiss - Burger Rössli - Natural - Blend - Mild
Ingredients: A Virginia base, Maryland, Kentucky, Burley and Java.
COMMENT: I believe this blend is one of the most *beautiful* I have seen. There are so many colors, such as yellow, brown, green, red, black, etc. The cut is also most intriguing: Ribbon, coarse, fine, etc. The taste and aroma are also extremely rewarding and match the excellence of the blend appearance. The only thing that I could criticize here is the fact that there are rather too many big pieces of stems (I honestly like it!). I highly recommend it for natural VA, as well as cigar, smokers.
Note: Essendo un amante dei tabacchi naturali, ho apprezzato questa miscela. E? anche abbastanza neutra per essere utilizzato per stemperare gli eccessi di altri tabacchi. Ma già di per sé può andar bene come miscela ?all day - all occasion?.

Name: Swiss - Burger Söhne - Clever - Natural Pressed - Cut Plug - Mild
Ingredients: Virginias, lots of Kentucky, Maryland, Burley and Brazilian leaf.
COMMENT: This is a true tobacco for the natural, pressed tobacco connoisseurs. It comes in "Cut Plug" form, which in this case means "broken flake'; though it's described as "American style", it is a "naturally" sweet tobacco. It can be either packed as it is or rubbed out further. The pouch aroma is natural and nutty. When smoked, it offer a delicious taste combination of nuttiness, spiciness, and sweetness. It burns slowly and evently down to a fine ash. If you enjoy pressed VAs, and want something that will give you a unique smoking experience, try this one.
Note: Essendo un amante anche dei tabacchi pressati, ho apprezzato anche questa miscela. E? un buon ?broken flake? come lo definirei io, un po? spesso. Ottimo l?aroma e il gusto, abbastanza profondo e appagante, senza essere troppo caratterizzato. Impicciosa, però, la manipolazione necessaria al caricamento.

Name: Swiss - Villiger - Cornetto - Natural- Blend - Mild
Ingredients: Virginias, Java, Burley and Orientals.
COMMENT: This is a blend that really offers a unique smoking experience, thanks for the variety of rare leaves used, such as Java and Swiss Burley. A blend can not be as spicy and natural sweet and nutty as this one. The pouch aroma is intriguing and gets you ready for a *different* smoke. The level of humidity is perfect, and for some strange reason you feel that the blend is "crispy" though it is rightly moist. In case you're wondering what the manufacturer descibes it as "Dutch" and "American", I believe it's because of the respective"Java" and "Burley" used.
Note: Secondo me ? the manufacturer descibes it as Dutch and American", perché col cavolo che è naturale. Secondo me c?è dentro di tutto. Ma non è cattivo, meglio comunque di un cazzotto in un occhio!

Name: Swiss - Villiger - Grünband - Flavored - Blend - Extra Mild
Ingredients: Virginia, Burley, Orientals, Java and Paraguay.
COMMENT: It has a very discrete and intriguing flavor! This flavor is confirmed upon lighting and continues to be pleasant without biting. It creates a pleasant room aroma, and can be also enjoyed by those who usually smoke natural tobaccos.
Note: Confermo il giudizio precedente circa il cazzotto!

Name: Gawith & Hoggarth - Bright CR Flake - Natural Virginia - 6-Inch Flake - Mild
GH's Description: 100% pure virginia leaf with no additional flavours made from a blend of Brazilian, Zimbabwe and Malawi bright vrginia leaf. The pressed tobacco as with all flakes, is left to mature before cutting into flakes, to allow for the best combination of flavours.
Note: Tutti i GH provati sono realmente ?easy to rub and pack? e offrono una combustione ottima. Detto questo, sembrano essere tutti soddisfacenti, senza però eccellere. Questo Virginia è senza difetti, ma manaca qualcosa ?

Name: Gawith & Hoggarth - Brown Flake - Natural Virginia - 6-Inch Flake - Mild
GH's Description: As with Bright CR Flake, this is another tobacco that devises its flavour simply from the choice of leaf in the blend, and has no additional casings or flavours to enhance the smoke. (u/s - stands for unscented) 83.5% Blended virginias are combined with a relatively high (for English Blends at any rate) proportion of Malawi Burley, 12.5%, to give flavour and depth to the smoke, and the addition of just 4% Malawi dark fired leaf is sufficient to combat the typical sharpness of the virginia leaf resulting in a rounded medium strength smoke.
Note: Questo è interessante per la combinazione inconsueta della miscela, per il resto vale quanto detto sopra.

GH's Description: A very mild blend, using predominantly flue-cured Virginia, but with the addition of some sun-cured both to cool land sweeten the smoke. A rough-cut into very coarse pieces also contributes to cooling the smoke.
Note: Assomiglia molto al ?Medium Virginia? flake di SG. Buono ma un po? inconsistente. Io lo fumo insieme al DVC Chocolate, di cui appresso.

Name: Gawith & Hoggarth - Coniston Cut - Slightly Flavored VA - Flake- Extra - Full
GH's Description: This tobacco is a blend containing 75% dark fired leaf 12.5% Malawi Burley and 12.5% Virginia. Your would therefore rightly expect a very strong smoke and one perhaps dominated by the pungent burnt smokey flavour so characteristics of leaf cured by open fire and smoke.
We do apply a very discreet top flavour. The flavour used... I would describe as 'nutty'. The other flavours are the typical English 'floral' / 'soapy' ones but the dosage rates for all are minimal - just sufficient to round off the blend and import a 'hint of flavour'.
Note: Buono, di gusto pieno, soddisfacente. Meglio fumato insieme al successivo (di cui è il negativo). L?aromatizzazione è leggera, ma a volte un po? fuori luogo (sa di borotalco!)

Name: Gawith & Hoggarth - No. 7 Broken Flake - Slightly Flavored VA - Broken - Mild
GH's Description: This is virtually a blend reversal of Coniston Cut PLug with 75% Flue-cured Virginia. 16 % dark fired 9% Burley. The blend therefore has far milder characteristics; and is rounded off with the addition of typical English flavours, and a touch of vanilla.
Note: Valgono le stesse considerazioni di cui sopra. Questo è leggero, ma ugualmente interessante. Ci guadagna ad essere mischiato all?altro e smorza un po? il profumo di borotalco. La caratteristica più interessante è la consistenza morbida e friabile dei flake, deisamente piacevole.

Name: Gawith & Hoggarth - Ennerdale Flake - Flavored VA - 6-Inch Flake - Mild
GH's Description: Our best selling flake by a wide margin. Predominately virginia leaf from Brazil, Zimbabwe and Malawi (86%) but with the addition of sun cured Malawi (10%) to add sweetness, strength and to cool the smoke and Malawi Burley (4%) to "carry the flavour" in addition to its cooling and strength qualities. (Burley is very good at absorbing casings and flavours) A background flavour of Almond is enhanced with the addition of fruit flavours, vanilla, and the special 'English type' flavours which give this tobacco its distinctive, yet typical 'English' Aroma associated with the UK best selling brands such as Condor, St Bruno and mellow virginia.
Note: Aromatizzazione leggera e gradevole, sulla base di un buon tabacco, solo un po? leggerino.

GH's Description: A simular blend of pure virginia leaf as Bright CR Flake, but with the addition of some special virginia casings to enhance the natural sweetness of the leaf, finished off with a light top flavour of Honey Dew and other sweet flavourings which all combine after pressing to provide a mild sweet gently aromatic smoke.
Note: Vale lo stesso commento fatto per l??Ennerdale?

Name: Gawith & Hoggarth - Curly Cut - Natural Virginia - Curly Cut - Medium
GH's Description: Manufactured by 'spinning' tobacco leaves into a rope which is then made into a roll form, pressed, and finally cut to produce the round tobacco circles. In this tobacco, unlike the twist, which uses all dark leaf, the rope is spun using Bright Virginia leaves for the outer wrapper with the effect of producing both an attractive contrast of colour in the finished cut circles, and, of course, a milder smoking tobacco when compared to the normal 'twist' tobacco.
Note: Qui cominciamo ad entrare ad un livello decisamente superiore, anche se non mi sento di dare l?OTTIMO (manca ancora qualcosa, infatti, come dice Tarek). Tabacchi decisamente maturi e rotondi, per una fumata finalmente appagante e senza profumi estranei. A proposito ? non mi fiderei troppo delle somiglianze proposte da Tarek!

GH's Description: As above but made on a different spinning machine that produces a thicker rope.
Note: Valga quanto detto sopra. Concordo con il fatto che sono tabacchi che ?escono alla distanza? (risultano infatti leggermente inconsistenti all?inizio, ma poi ?). Una parola sul caricamento. Per me vanno stropicciati tra le dita e caricati con una certa pressione. Come tutti i tabacchi in dischi, bisogna imparare a fumarli, perché danno il meglio di sé solo in certe condizioni di pressione e intensità di fumata. (se trovi il punto giusto, però, sanno riservare piaceri davvero rari).

Name: Gawith & Hoggarth - Sliced Brown Twist - Natural Virginia - Curly Cut - Extra Full
GH's Description: As curly cut, except the wrapper used is dark fired leaf. This grade of tobacco we buy from Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique and Malawi. The characteristics are all more or less the same: The curing over Smokey fires gives this leaf its distinctive pungent aroma and strong smoke.
Note: Applicate le considerazioni precedenti a un tabacco da sigari tipo ?Toscano? e ne uscirà fuori un giudizio superlativo (per chi ama fumare forte, s?intende)! Non prende l?ottimo solo perché non lo consiglieri a chiunque, dovunque, e in ogni momento. Un suggerimento: provarlo miscelato, in porzioni variabili secondo i gusti, con i precedenti e secondo me si può raggiungere la perfezione.

Name: Gawith & Hoggarth - Dark Bird's Eye - Natural Virginia - V. finely cut -Full
GH's Description: Manufactured from Dark tobacco 'whole leaf' rather than strips, the mid-rib (or stem) gives the 'birds eye' effect when cut. A strong smoke which was particularly favoured by the fishermen as the finer cut meant the tobacco was easier to light and to keep-in on board ship when the weather was bad.
Note: Per me assomiglia più allo ?Sliced Brown Twist? che al St.Bruno. è vero che all?inizio sembra docile e fumabile (e anche buono), ma poi arriva la ?zampata? allo stomaco! Attenzione quindi a non dargli troppa confidenza. Ottimo per gli amanti dell cigar leaf.

Name: Gawith & Hoggarth - DVC Chocolate - Flavored VA - Cavendish Mixture -Mild
GH's Description: The DVC stands for Dark Virginia Cavendish, and is just our version of a 'black' cavendished tobacco, produced by heating virginia leaf with lots of steam. The process removes a lot of the stronger elements in the leaf with the results that the smoke is extremely mild. We find the chocolate flavour complements the blend.
Note: Dulcis in fundo. Un buon Cavendish non troppo smielato, ma decisamente poco profondo fumato da solo. Da usare in miscela con altri tabacchi per arricchirne l?aroma (ottimo con il Broken Scotch Cake).
